Minnehaha Park In Minneapolis

If your travels bring you to Minneapolis, Minnesota, be sure to visit Minnehaha Park, located in South Minneapolis. It’s a park that has it all; from biking to hiking, there are many great things to see and do. Also located in the Park is the first wood-frame house built west of the Mississippi, along with an old train depot that was built in 1875. Minnehaha Park is more than a park with a playground — it is rich in history.

Located between Hiawatha Avenue and Minnehaha Parkway, Minnehaha Park is one of the oldest parks in the state. With over half a million visitors per year who can debate its popularity? Minnehaha Park has its own waterfalls called “Minnehaha Falls” — each year thousands flock to this 53-foot falls in order to catch a glimpse of this magnificent structure. If you are having a wedding during the summer months, be sure to take a stroll through the Park. The waterfall provides an excellent backdrop no matter what the season for any camera enthusiast. While in the Park, don’t forget to stop by the John H. Stevens House.

John H. Stevens served as a colonel in the United States Army doing the Mexican-American war. Stevens’ home was the first wood-frame house built west of the Mississippi, over the years the house has been moved several times due to expansion and development. Stevens home was moved for the final time in 1896 with the help of hundreds of Minneapolis school kids and a team of horses. The house was loaded on a trolley and pulled to its current location in Minnehaha Park.

Also located on the park grounds is the old Minnehaha Depot which was built in 1875. The depot was also known as “The Princess Depot” — its trains made daily trips to Fort Snelling, downtown St. Paul, along with trips to downtown Minneapolis. Today the Minnehaha Depot serves as a museum, which is open on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

As you can see there’s more to Minnehaha Park than BBQ and picnics, romantic strolls and biking. On your next visit to Minneapolis feel free to explore our park districts they are some of the finest this nation has to offer.
